Well Kiddos its officially the 1980s again and Nintendo is coming in strong. Any doubts or worries we had about Nintendo’s latest hardware is put to rest. I have always thought and stand by the motion that, “Software makes a successful platform, not hardware.”But for those who care, here are the things we know about the Switch itself. Nintendo has confirmed the following and other details will be available later on.

DeNA have helped introduce some interesting functions to the mysterious Joy-cons. They feature advance rumble feedback and can sense distance without a sensor bar. Like the Wiimotes, they come with wrist straps to ensure safety and to make the Joy-cons more comfortable to hold. NFC support is also baked in the Joy-Cons and not the Switch screen itself. The big N has announced there are over 80 different games in development and we were presented with big announcements from Square Enix to EA.
It’s been a long time since Nintendo had Third Party Developers like this. Everyone’s faith has been restored and its seems like Sony and Microsoft have serious competition. Innovation was on point and even Todd Howard from Bethesda Studios is eagerly awaiting for their next big hit on the Switch. The latest Mario Game dubbed “Super Mario Odyssey” showed off nice visuals and an expansive world. It’s been some time since Mario last had a game this robust and massive. Other big titles such as Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade 2 will release along with Mario at a later date. The following games are available to pre-order at the moment.

The Nintendo Switch is officially launching March 3, 2017 worldwide with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As of the presentation stands, you will be able to purchase the Nintendo Switch Console with two flavors. Standard Matte Black and another variation with blue and red Joy-cons dubbed Neon. Nintendo is making most of its money thru game preorders and accessories. I’m not surprised as Nintendo has a history of selling the initial unit cheap and make the accessories expensive. Prices may vary and be subject to change per retailer.

The Switch is all about Multiplayer and enjoying the experience with all your friends/family. Up to 8 players Local Multiplayer and are now setting up a equivalent online services like Sony and Microsoft. This of course means, starting in Fall, the Big N will begin charging like everyone else. I of course was expecting this move and will further indict how serious Nintendo cares about staying relevant. The big N have not announced a Price Point but will likely follow suit to PS+ and Xbox Live. Until more games are available, I don’t see a lot of people adopting it. More than likely, the free games will be enough for some and lacking for others. This is pretty much the feeling people get from PS+ Games and Games with Gold. With that said, PC is officially the only platform with free online features.
Social interactions and game play have been well thought out. You will be able to have chat and setup gaming sessions via mobile. I can imagine some games would even offer mobile add-ons to encourage longer use of their products and services. Many retailers have already sold out of these hot cakes and thus continues trends of Nintendo marketing so far. I expect the Neon Colors to be more sought after for a little while until Nintendo releases additional colors. Almost Guaranteed this will happen and limited edition variants will surface with given time.
Let us know your thoughts of the presentation and what games are hoping to see blossom on Nintendo’s latest platform. What were your highlights on the presentation and what would you like to see change further in the Switch Platform? I’m extremely curious how the OS will look and will we see the features of the Super Famicom Satellaview come into play? Imagine using the Animal Crossing Game as the menu hub for the Nintendo Switch. A Pokemon Stadium would definitely be interesting to see with the Joy-con setup. Portable 2 Player Pokemon Battles with Stadium environments sound awesome and throw in 8 Player support to add the icing on the cake. Nintendo has stated all the features of all past consoles and portables made it into the Switch. This would be the perfect opportunity to play the allusive BS titles Japan only got via Virtual Console. We will have to wait and see what the future brings us.

UPDATE: Nintendo has introduced not well received online membership policies and the internet is grilling them. If Nintendo doesn’t change this BS, They could fail ultimately. Hopefully all this backlash will be enough to convince them to reverse their insane polices. Nintendo may have done more preorders than before but their stock prices are dropping at an alarming rate. There are Dank Memes beyond the eye can see.

The online subscription is going to kill this thing I bet.
I feel like we need to give Nintendo a fair chance at doing this. Everyone got mad when Sega, Microsoft and Sony started charging for online services. All these companies have made policies and reverted them due to backlash. We have dealt with online services getting DOS, censorship of dialog with online chat, account info breached, raising prices and offer terrible free games. Even bloody EA offers a online service to play their games exclusively. Let’s hope Nintendo understands to treat the last of its fan base right and do right by them. We have to wait and see what happens
It’s just if the online service goes down enough to make it on the top 10 down sites on downdetector.com, like PSN does, then people have good reason to be mad at a company charging them a premium for mediocre service. Nintendo online has never been all that good in my experience and I don’t have much hope they’ll be all that better than Sony.
Also pushing the expense of these servers onto the consumers is just wrong. Someone who bought a PS4 in 2013 and pays for PS+ yearly has actually spent $580 + whatever overpriced games they also buy for $60. I honestly hope consoles die soon and just let PC take over the gaming market.
Honestly, I found the presentation for the Switch laughable. It was so laughable it was almost pathetic. Most of the games they unveiled for it were either also coming to or already out on the PS4 or Xbox One, or even the Wii U. While most of the Switch exclusive titles looked rather gimmicky. And not just that, the prices of the games have since been listed? The new Zelda game is fetching $90-$190AU on the Switch, vs only $80 on the Wii U. By comparison, new games released on the Vita are usually $60 vs $100 or more for their PS4 counterparts. But most of the games coming to Switch aren’t even new. They are overpriced re-releases. Hell, Skyrim costs $100 on the Switch! I can still buy it brand new on the PS3 for only $20.
As for the hardware, after all the hit and miss with the Wii-mote, my expectations for the joy-cons motion controls are not very high. Honestly, the most use I got out of the Wii-mote was turning it sideways and using it like a Sega Master System controller for Virtual console games.
The sad part of all this is that Nintendo are gloating about the ability to take your console with you and play it on TV as though they invented this concept, when really Sony beat them two it long ago. The 2000, 3000 and Go models of the PlayStation Portable had a video output, which allowed you to plug your handheld into a television via composite, S-video or component cables whenever you wanted to play at home and then take it with you on the go. The PlayStation Vita doesn’t have video output options, although you can play some games on television with the PSTV microconsole. And as you know with the Henkaku whitelist hack, you can play almost the Vita’s entire library.
Honestly, my only interest with the Nintendo Switch or NX as it was known back then, was the rumour that it would be backwards compatible with DS and 3DS and allow you to play them on television. I’d love to be able to play Driver Renegade and Cop the Recruit on TV – they’re the only two games I bought a 3DS for! When the backwards compatibility rumour was debunked, my interest in the Switch completely dried up.
And to be brutally honest, I’m rather skeptical by the number of third party developers that Nintendo mentioned. Nintendo’s over reliance on inferior storage mediums (cartridges, mini-DVD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs when Blu-ray-ROMS were standard!) has caused their third party support to dwindle over the years. The Wii U’s third party support was dismal. Third parties won’t have anything to do with Nintendo’s hardware because it just isn’t powerful enough. Bill Summerwill of EA Canada once tweeted that “The Wii U is crap […] Nintendo are walking dead at this point”
Now suddenly, Nintendo has all the third parties in the world supporting their Switch? That doesn’t add up. That sends some red flags waving. I wouldn’t put it past Nintendo to bluff about the number of third parties supporting their Switch to try and sell some units. But I will reserve my judgement until I see each of those companies announce a game for the Switch.
