Review: True Blue Ultradrive for Sega Genesis Mini

There is already a free solution to adding games to your Sega Genesis Mini out there. We talked about that recently and have a tutorial for it here. However, if you want to add games to your Sega Genesis Mini and don’t have the technical prowess or the time for it. There is a simpler way if you don’t mind spending some money on it ($40) and also legally own the games in question. If so, keep on a’scrolling!

Description:

‘The only Genesis/Megadrive accessory you will ever need! This simple add-on offers a complete collection of all Genesis/Megadrive games to turn your Genesis/Megadrive mini into the ultimate retro gaming console. Over 800 games (813 in total) games from all regions, all style, there is no ending to gameplay. Works exactly like the other pre-included games, except there is so many more…Easy to use, just 2 minutes to install with any Windows or Mac PC. Includes a mini USB hub so you can enjoy all the fantastic 2-player games without losing your second controller compatibility! Accept no imitation: True Blue Mini is the original Mini & Classic consoles game enhancer. We use only high quality components and ensure 100% compatibility, durability and safety with your console– for any region, at any time. Beware of low-quality/faulty clones!’

Features:

  • ‘Packed with over 800 additional Mega Drive/Genesis games.
  • Supports real time saves for all games, just like the original console.
  • Includes Hub to allow for multiple players while using device.
  • 4 in 1 official consoles.
  • You can run you mini console as each of the four official regions: USA, Europe, Japan, Asia.
  • Shows 102 games per page and easily swaps between pages via button presses.
  • Short descriptions for every game
  • Full colour covers for every game.
  • Simple one time install process.
  • Plug and play usage. Just plug device in and turn console on to use it.’

Pros:

  • Easy setup. While I’m going to make another article that explains the handful of steps to set up the True Blue Ultradrive, I do want to mention that it’s easy. You’ll download a program from their website to flash the current updated files onto the console. So you will need a PC for the Ultradrive gilrd. But rest assured, it’s only once and it only takes about three minutes. You may need to borrow a friend’s PC if you don’t have one handy. But as I said, after that one time, you won’t need it again.
  • Games. Once you’ve finished setting it up, you’ll find that there are 813 games in total. This is full set of ROMs of all titles from all regions, sans any duplicates. PAL games play alright. If you’ve settled for playing 50Hz games on the PS1 Classic, you’ll be fine here. I couldn’t really notice any difference. I also think that they defaulted to the US version of a game if it was present in all regions. If you want to see the full list of games on the True Blue Ultradrive, scroll to the bottom. It’s such a long list, it makes more sense to put it below instead of interrupting the flow of the article.
  • Organized. You’ll find that once you’ve booted your Ultradrive the first time that it’s set up very clean and intelligently. There are 8 pages of games of 103 games per page. Best of all, you’ll see that they all have original full cover art. So not only is it easy enough to swap through the pages of 100ish games per page, but you’ll also be able to easily spot titles you’re familiar with. I never had any problems with the sorting and sifting through pages, so that’s another win for the Ultradrive.
  • Plug and Play. The product is, at its core, not a plug and play device. However, once you’ve spent your three minutes on the computer, it will be a plug and play. You can use it like that for years to come and you can use it on more than one Sega Genesis (at a time). That means even if your Sega Genesis Mini shoots crap one day you can do the quick 3 minute install on your new one and use the Ultradrive on it. Or maybe you get a second one for another room, you can use the Ultradrive on the secondary console. Yes you have to do the quick install on it too, but then it’s truly a plug and play. This is compared of course to the competitor, Project Lunar. It’s much longer than three minutes. And that’s putting it lightly.
  • Load Times. The games that I tested (which was far less than the 813 games that comes on it) worked without a hitch. They also loaded extremely fast. I noticed no difference in the load times of the new games over the original built-in games. I was truly impressed that the games that were on the USB could be loaded in such a timely fashion.
  • Single USB. What does “single USB” mean here? Well I’m actually comparing the Ultradrive to the original PS1 Classic True Blue. So what I mean by that is that for the PS1 True Blue, you had to buy 3-4 different USB sticks to get a lot of the PlayStation library. This time around, given the size of the games, it all fits onto one stick. And since the games are much smaller, they load much, much quicker than the games on the PS1 Classic True Blue. It’s a great scenario all around for the Ultradrive.
  • USB Hub. If you’re someone who intends on playing multiplayer games and realizes that there are only 2 USB slots on the console and the Ultradrive takes up one, don’t fear. The Ultradrive comes with a 4-port USB hub. This will supplement a lost USB port so you can still play two player games. You’ll even have some extra ports for playing those 3-4 player games if you have extra controllers that the Genesis Mini supports.
  • No Hub Necessary. Now, if you’re just one person like me and you don’t need to have a second player, do the following. Ditch the big ugly USB hub (or keep it for your PC, you did pay for it after all). The setup of the Ultradrive doesn’t technically require the USB hub. It even mentions it straight on the box. It says that you can actually just use the True Blue Ultradrive in the second slot and the primary control in the first slot.
  • Saves. Since all that this Ultradrive does is add more games (to put it as simply as possible) the main features of the Sega Genesis still exist. So the real-time saves still work on the Ultradrive games. The Ultradrive doesn’t break anything and the Genesis isn’t smart enough to know any better about the games not being original. So everything that I tested worked 100% as it should with the saves. The rest of the Genesis works as it should as well.
  • Modes. If you need to go back to the original mode of the console instead of booting into the True Blue mode you easily can. The website tells us how easy it actually is: “Hold the RESET button for 5 seconds while powering on the Console. Let go of RESET once you see red light on the Console flashing quickly. The Console will then save this new boot mode and boot.” Then if you need to go back to the True Blue mode, you just hold the RESET button for another 5 seconds. If you hold it for 10 total seconds, you’ll uninstall the True Blue mode, so be careful.

Cons:

  • Computer. If you don’t have a PC and none of your friends/family do, then just don’t bother with this. This is something that absolutely requires a PC to get started. This is for those who want more games and have access to a PC to connect their Genesis to for flashing. I know it sounds like not much of a con since most people have computers. But not everyone does and if you’re in one of those families that have money and have moved onto iPads and Smart TVs, this just isn’t for you.
  • Featureless. The second con comes down to a con we brought up with the True Blue for PS1 Classic. And that is that it doesn’t have any extra features. This is a bare-bones, just games on a USB stick. The benefit of going with the new Project Lunar is that you can add Emulation Station and Retroarch to the console. Meaning if you want you can extend out and play 32X and Sega CD games. Or you can go as far as playing other company’s consoles.

Final Thoughts:

This one is more of a recommended product from True Blue than their PS1 Classic. There is only two cons this time around. We won’t dwell on the past True Blue, of course. You’re here wondering if you should even get the new thing. First off, it needs to be reiterated that the only legal way to have these games digitally is if you own them physically. The games that come on the Genesis Mini are licensed to you to play on it only. But these other games are not unless you have the physical cartridges. But, let’s say that you only want to play the digital games that you do own from it or that you own all 813 games. Should you buy the Ultradrive? Well, let’s break it down even further. If you don’t want to drop $40 and you know how to use products like haxchi for instance, then the free method that we outlined on our site is where you should be headed to. However, if you’re okay with spending $40 and alright with a PC program doing 3 minutes worth of work for you, then by all means, buy this product. We’ll have the tutorial up for it soon enough and so when it arrives you can follow our instructions and be in some great Sega titles in under 10 minutes.
