Retro Review: Mario Tennis on Gameboy Color!

Mario TennisHey, guys! It’s been a while since I’ve done a retro review and I apologize. I’ve had a lot going on and haven’t had as much time to write. Anyway, Here we go with Mario Tennis on the Gameboy Color!

I am a HUGE fan of tennis games although it’s been really difficult for me to find a tennis game I like. I remember back in the early 2000’s playing a tennis arcade game at Walmart. I don’t remember the name, but it was the best tennis game I have ever had my hands on. The last guy was Arthur Ashe and he would wear you out, but I digress. I’ve played a lot of tennis games over the years, but this one has always been one of my favorites!!

You can start off with an exhibition match to get yourself into the groove of the game. It’s pretty simple. You can play as simple or complex as you like. Simply hitting the A or B button will hit the ball if you’re looking for an easy experience just hitting back and forth. However, if you’re a skilled player and want more control there are advanced controls that, given the correct button presses, will add topspin, backspin, slam or lob.

The real treat of this game is Mario Tour where you create your own character and play while building your stats!

I love the simplicity of the controls as a lot of games get too complex and you can’t enjoy the game. Simply tapping a button will toss the ball for a serve and then you can tap, double tap, direct, smash or lob your serve. The returns work pretty much the same way. Depending on the button and combo you use your return will either spin, lob or smash right by them. Knowing when to do which is up to you. 😉

The graphics are pretty good for a Gameboy Color game. Nothing to write home to mom about but it certainly gets the job done keeping your attention glued to the ball!

It’s obviously a great game on the Vita with either Masterboy or any emulator of your choice but you can play it on almost anything these days. Heck, if you want to game on your iPhone or Android you can. Technology has come a long way in my lifetime!tennis

If you guys know some other games I might like to try let me know. Hope you enjoy this little short review and as always… HAPPY GAMING!!!

  1. Nice retro review.

I haven’t played a lot tennis games but seems a fun game (i really liked Virtua tennis on the DC)

I’ll give it a try not on an emulator in my GBColor + Everdrive 😛

    Kudos!
