When we posted the first reveal trailer waaaaay back, many gamers were indeed excited to learn about a PlatinumGames developed Transformers game featuring the original generation – the hype combined with nostalgia was absolutely real, but there was no news at all immediately after.
Usually, when titles have little to no marketing – and in this case, review copies weren’t even sent out until a day before release, confidence immediately dies down, but from what we’ve seen so far, Transformers: Devastation is a childhood dream finally realized.
As a high paced action game similar to the PlatinumGames style (Bayonetta, Vanquish, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance), players will get to choose from five classic Autobots: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sidewipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock, each with their character specific traits and transformations.
In massive 3D environments, gameplay is extremely focused on bringing the unique transformation aspect to life as the ability to switch between vehicle and robot mode is essential – players can chain together melee attacks, ram nearby enemies as a car, and finish with a barrage of bullets, all in an amazing PlatinumGames flourish.
There is also a careful attention to detail with not only the slick cell shaded visuals but with audio; original voice actors reprise their roles from Autobot to Decepticon: Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime), Dan Gilvezan (Bumblebee), Michael Bell (Sideswipe, Scrapper), Gregg Berger (Grimlock, Long Haul) and Frank Welker (Megatron, Soundwave). Even the music is written by Vince DiCola and Kenny Meriedeth, the original composers for the 80’s television show!
And there’s even a bigger surprise for fans: Andy Schmidt, Transformers comic writer/editor pens a fitting new story; it’s honestly as if the game is just an extension of all the epic memories from the past.
Released this week, to quote Optimus Prime – “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings” – if you’re a fan, you might not even have a choice – you will definitely want to pick Transformers: Devastation up!
