For those of you who have a PSVR such as this writer, you know how fantastic the PSVR is straight out of the box.  How great it feels, the smell of the rubber, how smooth the games run (and even better for our friends who play PSVR on PS4 Pro), but it’s time to update it.  Because yes, even though it may have been awesome out of the box, even the best things deserve to get better.  So let’s talk about the steps to applying the firmware update to PSVR.Updating PSVR

Automatic Steps for Updating

  1. Before powering on your PS4/PS4 Pro, hook up your PSVR appropriately (I will not have those steps here as your PSVR came with instructions on how to do so).
  2. Put your PSVR headset on to your comfort level as usual.
  3. Using the power button on the volume control of the PSVR, power on your PS4/PS4 Pro.
  4. Select any profile you’d like (unless you’re the only one, then skip this step).
  5. If done correctly, and have a valid internet connection, it should automatically prompt you to update the system.  If so, follow the screen prompts using your PS4 DualShock 4 until it’s complete and then it will restart the system (potentially more than once) and then you are complete. If it does not give you a prompt, do not worry, you can always do it manually, skip to step 5 below.

  9. Choose the option that states “Update PlayStation VR Device Software”.
  10. Choose Next.
  11. Choose Update.
  12. If done correctly, and you have a valid internet connection, it should begin the download of the software and then the install.  It will restart the system (potentially more than once) and then you are complete.  If there is nothing new to add to the headset, then it will inform you that you are up to date.

PSVR's Software

Playstation just pushed the 4.50 firmware this past week and needless to say, it’s awesome.  It’s got a wide array of new features, tweaks, and options.  But the best option of all belongs to our friends who own PS4 Pro systems.  The feature is simply called “Boost Mode”.  It allows for the PS4 Pro to take its extra horsepower and apply it to any older game.  So let’s quickly go through the steps about how to turn this feature on!

  1. Power on the system (it seems obvious enough).
  2. Head over to the Settings section.
  3. Scroll down to the System option.
  4. Now you’ll scroll down to the ‘Boost Mode’ option.
  5. Check mark the box next to it.
  6. Seriously, that’s it, guys.

As a side note, it is absolutely worth mentioning that not every single game will take being “boosted” nicely.  That seems to be the only downside to enabling Boost Mode.  You may find yourself turning it off and on and again if you’re someone who plays a lot of different games.  My suggestion would be to simply play one entire game at a time or maybe even beat all of your non-boostable games first and then turn it on once you’ve cleared all of them.
