Many issues have come to light in the past couple of days regarding the frame-rate issue for Fallout 4’s Far Harbor DLC expansion on the PlayStation 4. The biggest issue is how the game regularly dips below 20fps especially when there is a lot happening on screen like if you’re trying to fight off a terrifying mutant angler fish in slow motion.
Bethesda said that the released version of Far Harbor which came out on May 19 was an improved version after the beta, however the developer even acknowledged that it still wasn’t up to par.
YouTube user Oblivions Reaper’s video of the rate issues he experienced in Far Harbor is definitely a testament to the sorts of issues I personally have faced whilst playing and I’m sure many others.
According to players who have taken to the Fallout 4 sub-reddit, many are suggesting that the performance issues are being caused by the dense fog which is ultimately causing major frame rate issues on the PS4.
After exploring parts of the map with dense fog , it was literally like watching a slideshow. At first I had assumed it was my own PS4 overheating or maybe there wasn’t enough storage space and it was affecting the overall game-play experience. I tested my theory by going back to the Commonwealth and noticed that the performance issues definitely wasn’t half as bad as what I was experiencing in Far Harbor.
Many people have reported the issue in an attempt to make Bethesda aware, so in response to all the feedback on the official Fallout 4 blog they stated:
“We made optimizations based on the Far Harbor beta feedback, but understand some are experiencing issues. We are actively working on more improvements. As we have news and information, we’ll update this post. Thank you for playing Fallout 4.”
Vice President of Bethesda, Pete Hines confirmed that the fog is actually the culprit causing the issues as he commented in a Tweet
“We found some areas in the beta where this happens and fixed. There are new areas players are finding. We will fix. We are working on a fix. Some places where fog is causing issues we hadn’t seen in the beta.”
