Homebrews are unofficial apps/games made by hobby programmers.
Homebrews can be installed easily:
1) Download a homebrew you want:

2) Connect your PSP to PC. |
3) Navigate to PSP/GAME |
4) Copy the folder with the homebrew (should contain "EBOOT.PBP" file) to root/PSP/GAME. |
5) After copying, you should see the homebrew in XMB under "Game". |

Of course, there are other ways to run homebrews on PSP, such as Half-Byte Loader (it has not been ported to 6.61 yet), but using CFW is generally considered to be a better option.
